What is a bag under the eye, and what is the tear trough?

Behind the lower eyelid lies fat that protects the eye like a cushion. A thin membrane holds that fat in place. If that membrane becomes looser, the fat bulges forward: that is the bag. Just below that, the skin is attached to the edge of the eye socket by a band. A hollow with a shadow forms there: the tear trough. The bulge and the hollow reinforce each other.

The recovery

Initially, there is swelling and often bruising under the eye; this gradually subsides. The conjunctiva may be temporarily swollen or red. Cooling and rest help during the first three days.

• Work: you can generally resume administrative work after three days; physical work, care work and hospitality work not during the first week.
• Exercise: build up gradually after about a week.
• Contact lenses and make-up: after about a week; with the technique involving the incision under the lash line, make-up only after the stitches have been removed.
• Sutures: with the internal technique, sutures are usually not necessary. With the technique involving the incision under the lash line, we remove the sutures six days after the procedure.
• Check-up: after six days, at the clinic or, if you prefer, via video.
• Result: you often see a difference after just a few weeks; the final result is visible after approximately six months.

Risks

Every operation carries risks. During the consultation, the eye surgeon will discuss these with you in detail. The most important ones are:

• swelling and bruising, which may persist longer than expected;
• temporary swelling or irritation of the conjunctiva;
• a slight difference between left and right, or an unevenness;
• with the technique involving the incision under the lash line: a scar just below the eyelashes, and rarely a lower eyelid that sits slightly lower;
• Rarely: post-operative bleeding. Contact us immediately if pain increases, you experience a feeling of pressure behind the eye, or your vision deteriorates.
