What causes bags under the eyes?

The main causes are aging and hereditary predisposition. Smoking and excessive exposure to UV radiation, for example from tanning beds, can accelerate skin sagging. Sometimes a physical condition plays a role. Furthermore, due to the aging process, the cheeks can lose volume, making the fat under the eyes appear more prominent.

How do we treat bags under the eyes?

Our doctors treat bags under the eyes by means of a lower eyelid correction. During the procedure, fat under the eyelids is removed or repositioned to create a smoother contour and a more fluid transition between the area under the eyes and the upper cheeks. Our doctors ensure that they do not remove too much tissue or fat, as this can result in an unsatisfactory “hollow” appearance. We also ensure the preservation of the muscle responsible for blinking; we never sacrifice function and comfort for appearance. In some cases, we may use an internal approach (transconjunctival), where the incision is made on the inside of the eyelid so that no scar is visible on the outside. With the external technique (transcutaneous), the incision is placed just below the lash line, so that the scar is usually barely noticeable after healing.
